Marie Curie collection - Tesco

Despite the hard times we live in, the Minehead & District Lions were able to raise £315 for the

Marie Curie Charity at a recent collection in the Tesco store in Minehead. They would like to thank

all those who kindly gave for this vital charity.

Marie Curie supported 31,000 people last year alone – their nurses provide care for terminally ill

patients in their own home or hospices while offering support to families.

Peace poster and Food Cupboard

The Minehead & District Lions Club’s recent meeting at the Britannia Inn in Alcombe was a very special night with the attendance of Charlotte Shoosmith and Christine Payne.

Charlotte received an award and certificate from the Club for the South-West District (105 SW)Peace Poster. It is the first time that the District has won the award – well done Charlotte !

Christine, representing the Food Cupboard, received a £200 cheque from the Club to help those in need. Christine gave the Club a short but very enlightening talk about the vital work undertaken by the Food Cupboard which was set up in 2007 in Alcombe. The Project is designed to support those in need whether through unemployment, low income, old age and many other lifetime related problems.

The project covers all of West Somerset and since 2007 1,580 food parcels have been distributed with each parcel being worth around £30. From January this year up to the present date around 288 parcels have been given out – the same time last year 96 were distributed. This huge increase is partly due to the worsening economic conditions which has meant that even those in work are struggling. Added to this is the introduction of the Welfare Reform Act which since April 1st has ceased giving out Crisis Loans.

In a very positive light is the fact that the generosity of West Somerset is reflected in the amount of support received by the food Cupboard.

For more information on the Food Cupboard please ring Christine Payne on 077950 80637.

Water Well

The village of Ajolodo in Nigeria was the beneficiary of a water well supplied by the Minehead & District Lions Club recently. Lion Bill Trevett was the driving force behind the well and over the years has been associated with the installation of 50 wells, 5 of them with the Minehead Lions Club.

Water and sanitation coverage rates in Nigeria are among the lowest in the world. Access to improved water supplies are between 50 & 60 percent. Alabi Olaitan of the Ibadan Nigeria Lions Club was on-site to deliver instructions on maintaining the well in good order. This well will bring a massive health benefit to the village and forms part of the remit of the  Minehead & District Lions Club  on its International Agenda.

Donations - Children’s Hospice, Air Ambulance & Scouts

Donations were flowing freely at the recent Minehead & District Lions meeting at the Britannia Inn, Alcombe.

The first recipient was Paula Hullett, Community Fundraiser for the Children’s Hospice South West who received £800. The money itself came from donations given in memory of a long serving Lion, Clive Gurr, who passed away recently. He had served for 46 years and it was the express wish of his wife, June, that the amount was given to the Hospice.

The Hospice was founded in 1991 and has three hospices which serve the south west region. They provide “home from home” care for children with life limiting illnesses.

The second recipient was Graham Haw representing the West Somerset District Scouts who received £250 which will be used towards a new sit-on mower for use in the Scouts Field.

Finally, Derek Albutt representing the Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance received £436.50 towards the cost of their airlifts. Since their formation in 2000 they have transferred 9,400 people to hospital.

The Minehead Lions will now be gearing up for their Xmas collections but before that they will holding a Book Sale on Saturday 26th October at the Friends Meeting House, Bancks Street between 10am & 12.30pm. Coffee/tea and cake will be available for £1.50. All proceeds will go to supporting Charities that help blind or partially sighted people in Minehead and Somerset.

Press release - Letter to the Editor

Dear Sir

I had the pleasure of attending a Minehead & District Lions Club social evening at the Combe Restaurant in Minehead. It was a restaurant with a difference as it is part of the Skills and Enterprise Centre attached to the West Somerset College.

It is entirely manned by College Students who plan, prepare and serve a variety of superb meals. They paid attention to every detail from arrival, table settings and table service. Many who have attended the course have gone onto become Chefs at prestigious restaurants or onto University courses. Young people frequently receive a bad press in National Newspapers – this is a shining example of young people at their very best !

Yours sincerely

Stephen Fitzgerald
